Conference 4: Spirituality in an Evolutionary World (March 16, 2013)

Scientists and Catholic theologians examined Divine Providence, the Cosmological Anthropic Principles and new insights gained from a holistic view of science and theology in an increasingly interconnected world. What spiritual benefits can be gleaned from a heightened scientific awareness?

Session 1: Are the Universe and Its Laws “Designed for Life”?

Dr. Stephen M. Barr, PhD, University of Delaware

The laws of physics and the structure of the universe feature “anthropic coincidences” which may indicate that the universe and life have a purpose. We explored the alternative explanations found in subuniverses, M-theory and cosmic inflation.

Session 2: The Anthropic Principle in Psychological Science and Christian Theology

Dr. Everett Worthington II, PhD, Virginia Commonwealth University

Psychological science and theology enrich one another. I suggest what Christian theologies have posited about forgiveness and then examine one particular scientific approach to that topic.  The result should be a unique understanding of forgiveness that was not necessarily available from theology alone.

Session 4: Christ in Evolution

Dr. Ilia Delio, O.S.F., PhD, Woodstock Center, Georgetown University

We explored the idea that evolution is a transcendent process proceeding towards the fullness of Christ, that is, the unity of the material universe in love. Can our religious view of the world harmonize with scientific findings of our world?  Engaging Christian life in an evolutionary universe may be one of the urgent challenges of our day.
